Assay Technology was founded by C. R. (Gus) Manning in 1981, who was joined by a few investors in 1981-1984. In 1996, an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) was formed which acquired 100% of the company's stock by 2010.

Since 1997, employee ownership has driven the company performance, while good cash flow afforded acquisition opportunities leading to regular growth.

The company maintains an active interest in mergers and acquisitions with synergistic partners in chemically related businesses, especially owner operated or employee owned firms.
