AT Lab Method Modifications

Analytical Method Chemical(s) Modification
OSHA PV2119 Modified Acetic Acid Carbon wafer instead of charcoal in a tube.
OSHA 52 Acrolein Carbowax column; diffusive badge (Treated silica gel on aluminum wafer). External Calibration. Standards prepared by adding acrolein into a solution of 2-HMP and toluene, instead of spiking onto media. Extracted with 2 mL instead of 1 mL. All standard solutions and extracts stored in amber glass.
NIOSH 1604 Acrylonitrile Diffusive badge, benzyl alcohol co-solvent instead of acetone; Use of internal standards; dual column
TO-11 Aldehydes Media is GFF inside a badge. Eluant has been adjusted.
OSHA 60 Amines Badge Media: NIT on GFF. Reverse Phase instead of normal phase. Solvent: Acetonitrile/Water.
OSHA 188 Modified Ammonia GFF treated media instead of carbon beads.
OSHA 103 Anesthetic Gases Diffusive media instead of a tube when applicable. Extracted in 2 mL of toluene with internal standard calibration. Dual FID instead of just one column.
NIOSH 6011 Chlorine, Bromine None
NIOSH 500, 600 Dust None
OSHA 55 Ethyl 2-Cyanoacrylate (Super Glue) Tenax-TA media instead of XAD-7. Media inside of diffusive monitor.
ASTM D5578, OSHA 1010 Ethylene Oxide Carbowax column; Badge media different carbon than the tube; Acetonitrile/Toluene Solvent (badges only)
NIOSH 2016 Formaldehyde DNPH on GFF instead of silica gel. Use of buffer to neutralize the extract. Methanol as eluant.
OSHA 64 Glutaraldehyde NPH on GFF instead of silica gel. Use of buffer to neutralize the extract. Methanol as eluant.
NIOSH 2532 Glutaraldehyde DNPH on GFF instead of silica gel. Use of buffer to neutralize the extract. Methanol as eluant.
NIOSH 1550 Hydrocarbon mixtures Internal Standard, Dual Column Confirmation, Diffusive media.
NIOSH 1500 Hydrocarbons Internal Standard, Dual Column Confirmation, Diffusive media
OSHA 42, 47 Isocyanates None
EPA 7473 Mercury Method is applied to industrial hygiene air sampling media. Small-volume liquid mercury standards are introduced directly into quartz sample boats for calibration and quality control purposes. Results are calculated and reported as mass per sample (µg/sample) and, where applicable, converted to air concentration (mg/m³) based on sampling volume.
OSHA 125 Metals All ICP metals are analyzed following OSHA 125 Modified. However, the sample prep changes depending on metals requested and collection media: Analyses which include either Silver, Antimony, Tin, Iron or Titanium are prepared using a modification of NIOSH 7303 and OSHA 206 (Hydrochloric and Nitric acids used in Hot Block digestion, final sample - matrix 20% Hydrochloric acid.) Others (MCE, PVC, Ghost wipes) are prepared using a modification of NIOSH 7082 and OSHA 121. (Nitric acid used in Hot Block digestion, final sample matrix - 5% Nitric acid.). For Non-dissolving wipes (Smear Tabs), the preparation is a modification of NIOSH 7105. (Hydrochloric (if Ag, Sb, Sn, Fe, Ti included) and Nitric acids with 30% hydrogen peroxide digested on hot plate.) ELLAP Ghost Wipes are prepared using modifications of NIOSH 9102 and NIOSH 7303 (Hydrochloric and Nitric Acids, final sample matrix – 10% HNO3, 4% HCl.
NIOSH 6014 Nitrogen Oxides Badges Only: Sampling media is treated GFF instead of instead of treated molecular sieves.
L-OV (Internal Method, modified NIOSH 1500) Organics Use of co-solvents to better extract alcohols, ketones; Dual column; Use of Internal Standards; Diffusive media; Different columns from column listed.
OSHA 214 Ozone Collection media inside a diffusive monitor instead of a cassette. Slightly different eluant.
OSHA 32 Phenol, Cresol (badge) Badge Media: Carbon instead of silica gel.
