As the global leader in diffusive samplers, Assay Technology often gives technical presentations at the industry conference for the American Industrial Hygiene Association, AIHA Connect. For 2026, our Founder and Chief Technical Officer, Dr. Gus Manning, spoke about the tendency for safety professionals to underestimate workplace exposure variation and provided solutions to help overcome the problem.

At Tuesday’s Innovation Station, Gus did a deep dive on how convenient diffusive sampling badges can be used in conjunction with the AIHA’s IH Data Analyst software to better measure workplace variation in exposures. His work is grounded in the AIHA’s Exposure Assessment Committee’s finding that IH practitioners may underestimate exposures in the workplace because workplace exposures tend to have high variation with a skewed (lognormal) distribution, rather than a normal distribution.
Gus continued his examination of workplace exposure variation on Wednesday, reviewing the history of the issue and how Industrial Hygienists can avoid underestimating exposures using the statistical tools discussed at his Innovation Station talk.
